There are many jobs on farms that are considered non-hazardous under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Some possible farm tasks include:
- Loading and unloading trucks
- Operating small tractors (under 20 horsepower)
- Picking vegetables and berries
- Placing vegetables and fruits on conveyors or into boxes
- Clearing brush and harvesting trees up to 6 inches in butt diameter
- Working with animals on the farm or at fairs and shows (except breeding stock in a confined space like a pen)
- Raising and caring for poultry
- Milking cows
- Cleaning barns, equipment, and storage buildings
- Mowing farmstead lawns
- Riding, driving or exercising horses
- Handling irrigation pipes
- Riding on transplanters
While these tasks may be considered non-hazardous for youth employees, as an employer you still have responsibility for the worker safety. Worker safety includes proper training and supervision of the youth worker regardless of the task assigned to the youth.
